View Full Version : Sketch Comedy Writing / Performing

I do the whole stand-up thing once in a while... I want to get into sketch comedy, but obviously, unless you want to be the woman who played "Pat" from SNL, you can't have your own one-man/woman show.

I already know someone else here shares my enjoyment and dream of writing comedy, but does anyone else? If so, we need to collaborate! Common... we're all a bunch of funny SOBs... except that Trevor/Haddaway (what is love?) guy... he's just annoying... he'd be our heckler or something.

But seriously... we must do this!

Who's in?

"Performing Live, Tonight At ____ -- _____" -- it has a ring to it.

well i have several sketches written, but a few nights ago i look through them and realised that most of the were shit. i only have about 6 that are still good. my problem with sketch writing is that i find it hard to get good, smart ideas. once i get them i get on a roll and make decent ones. for instance, that one i posted a few months ago was based on an idea a friend had. i started thinking about how to do it, and wrote it in about an hour. right now i'm working on one that me and max (lopan) came up with last sunday when we were walking around. its about a guy who sues his lawyer with the same lawyer. it might be good, but i'm having some problems with it because as soon as he tells the lawyer that he wants to sue him it begins to seem too much like "downsizing" from season 2 (the lawyer talking about how he'll bring him down.)

if any one has any ideas about how i should work it, let me know. (PM please)

I can send you my script from the Uncaberet contest. I doubt it was good enough to win, since it was written by three amateurs from Canada, but it's got some good ideas in it.

Yeah, that does remind me of the downsizing sketch.

I'll PM you with some ideas that came to me though.. to keep it original.

Hey Hoe Tommy Hoe.
Heckle-Yes..Annoying-Yes
Skectch Comedy-Yes..StandUp Comedy-Yes
I live in SoCal, know quite a few people who might be able to help or at least point in the right direction. As for the Queer Canadian guy talkin about his script for the UnCaberat (Spell check me please douchebags,) I also wrote a skit that I think would be prefect for network sitcoms. Which means a lot of average everyday humor and kind of methodical as far as TV script writing goes. Then again, I work in an office and talk to a number of different people everyday. And those ass-faced writers make good fuckin coin (jezz, thought I saw Halloway run by,) writing their shit.
Tommy drop me a line, I would like to chat/talk more in detail about this.

Snip Snip BITCHES!

did you PM me yet punt? nothing was recieved.
like i said, the lawyer thing does seem a bit like downsizing, but i think that if i did it right it could be very smart and funny.

Would it be too gimmicky to do that lawyer sketch Patty Duke style? Or maybe you could get the Sklar brothers. Or maybe not.

tjamick

i'm not too sure what you mean by that.
if you mean have them act it out, no, i prefere to do the acting in my sketches just because i have them already planned out in my mind. i also have some acting experince (a few commercials and my leg was in dogma) so i can do it alright.

I'm saying you could use either camera trickery or identical twins so we're looking at two of the same lawyer as opposed to having one guy basically arguing with himself alone. But like I said, that might be too gimmicky.

thats not a bad idea. what other ideas are had here?

i want to hear what out there, and then i'll either get an idea from some ones, i'll use some one elses, or i'll combine the ideas into some sort of really cool uberdea

The stuff I wrote last was part of a sketch show that was going to network, but lost its funding half way through pre-pro. I'm going to make sure I have the rights to it, and then I'll start posting some of the ideas.

No scripts were ever written... just basic plots.

I'm not sure what kind of direction you're taking this thing, but I'm thinking there needs to be something about a countersuit.

You know what we REALLY need here is a "members only" section. Of course, anyone can sign up, so that's no guarantee that shit wont get stolen, but at least it would be more secure than a forum that's viewable to the entire world without jumping through any hoops.

So... Members Only?

"Excuse me? This is an official Looney Tunes jacket!"

Great picture, and idea, Steve. I'd share if there was something like that.

Also, I kind of hate Trevor a little less after he made the comment about bugle boy. But just a little less.

I thnk you should put Judge Judy in it. She's such a funny lady and completely untouched in the world of comedy.

snl does that all the time. also, i hate referencing pop culter because it makes things only funny for a time.

usually i would, but today i read a sketch to a friend, and he made all of these "changes" like "have them do it in a funny voice", "have it be george bush" and "you should add a joke about how stupid jessica simpson is." and this is some one who i thought had a good sense of humor, but he was compleatly serious, so i atomaticly figured you were serious. sorry for being an un funny prick

It's cool. Not seriously though, have Judge Judy invite all the other television judges to a pool party, the one runs near the pool despite warnings not to, falls and then they have a lawsuit on their hands. So it's Judy vs.... which one? My mom watches all of them... Joe Brown! Yeah, Judge Joe Brown tries to sue Judge Judy and she's all like "negro, please" and then everyone's all like "woot woot" and they all get into a fight over whose show the case is gonna be on! So then everyone's suing everyone!..... shit, just like South Park.

Never-Friggin-Mind..... :(

I have this dream of going to a shitty comedy club and making really terrible jokes all the way through the show (terrible as in the people who go to comedy clubs will like them but they'll be bad) and then with about ten minutes left I make a really good joke that's also very... whatever the crowd isn't like... and then no one laughs and then i go on a rant about how i think they are all idiots because i sat around purposely trying to find the dumbest, most mindless jokes i could think of just to see if these terribly simple people thought they were funny. and i'll tell them i was just mind-fucking them and it was a social experiment and i'll go on and on and be really angry and stuff, and everyone will be shocked and feel bad, but then i'll tell them another (unfunny) funny joke that they like and tell them i was just kidding about all that before. and then i'll walk off stage. and everyone will be very confused.

Four young, inner-city scientists, travel back in time to circa 1810 and re-invent history. Now, our four fathers are Thomas Jefforson, The Sugar Hill Gang, R. Kelly and Sir-Mix-Alot (by the way, technically, it should be "Sir Mix A Lot").

I'm thinking he shouldn't even BE.

I thought it'd be kinda funny if he actually got knighted. Then he'd be SIR Sir Mix-A-Lot.

i write shit all the time, and i come up with lots of ideas, my problem is following through on them, i think we should get into some writing teams on here, write a show, then get some good at flash to animate it for us

i really want to do an animated sketch show, so like each one of us who participate would be an animated actor on the show, and our animated actor would dress like other characters, and we could all record the voices for it

anyone down?>

im serious about this

tjamick

i've GOT the downs (you saw my pic)
but yeah, i've been thinking of an animated show, or even just some animated sketches. i have one called "the dancing JFK jr.s"its stop animation done with 50 paper cut outs of jfk jr. crying at his dad funeral, dancing and making really weird motions to classical or mariachi music.
i need to get a camera that would work for stop animation before i can film it, but i have it all worked out.
