hey where did this go?
apotatojudge

1. What is your favorite Mr. Show sketch? Now that I am having to do this I realize how hard it is to determine my absolute favorite sketch. I know it'll be from season four, oh, hell... I can't really choose - Let's go with Pallies, Larry Kleist - Rapist, Car Wash Change Thieves, or Josh Federman's "Genuine Hollywood Actual Report." But, wait - what about ...
2. Least favorite? Bad News Breakers. I don't know why, I just never liked that. Or Philouza. Especially Philouza. I think it's cause I missed some of it 'cause the tape I was using to record ended. I had to pop in another tape. Just seems ...too long.
3. Bob or David? David's stand-up, Bob's comedic timing. Does that make sense?
4. Favorite non-B&D cast member? Jay Johnston always had the best characters. CHOO-CHOO THE HURKY JERKY DANCER!!
5. Least favorite? Brett Paesal, just because she just always was there to, like, play a mom or the required woman character.
6. Best link? I don't know why, but when I first saw the "Singing" "News" Reporter I laughed so hard and kept rewinding and laughing at it. Jay's good at stuff like that. ...When David waves, confused, priceless. Or the Dollar Sign Eyes before Car Wash Change Thief Action Squad.
7. Worst link? ...But I didn't like the birds flying over the grandma's head and into John's pocket earlier in that episode. Too easy.
8. Favorite character? Bob's keep the chaaange guy. Or David's Derwin "I'ma fuck me a fish" on the Lifeboat. No, no, it's Josh Fenderman.
9. Least favorite? Bad News Breakers!
10. Best song in the show? Hands down - Willups Brighton, "Mouth full of Sores." That song pops into my head at least once a day.
11. Hottest cast member? BJ PORTER!
12. Top five (or ten) favorite quotes/lines.
I'm just going to think of the first ten ones I think of.
"Keep the chaaaange."
"You are shitting in my mouth and callin' it a Sundae."
"Sad songs are the key that get our tears out of eye jail."
"Cause life is precious... and God... and... the Bible."
"I'm Fran - and I'm a woman!"
"A little fucking difference."
"Hi, Larry Kleist is my name and selling insurance is my game. Raping used to be another game of mine..."
"Hey, you ever play thumbprint tic-tac-toe?"
"Mom and dad said I had to stay home all day and watch cartoons."
Followed by: "They gave me a beer and a bag of frozen peas."
I want to keep going.
1. What is your favorite Mr. Show sketch?
The Genuine Hollywood Factual Report, cracker barrel opening.
2. Least favorite?
The Fad Three or the ass nippled adventurer one.
3. Bob or David?
The Bob.
4. Favorite non-B&D cast member?
Jay Johnston.
5. Least favorite?
Scott Aukerman, probably because he was in it the least.
6. Best link?
Warning labels.
7. Worst link?
Hennessey Brothers apple butter.
8. Favorite character?
Fancypants.
9. Least favorite?
The ass nippled adventurer.
10. Best song in the show?
"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!" from the black & white film after the womens solidarity collective. Mostly because of the weird jumping thing.
11. Hottest cast member?
BOB.
12. Top five (or ten) favorite quotes/lines.
"DUCKIE!"
"All these goats are retarded"
"chim-chim-cheree!" (Jay Johnston as Jesus with a jetpack)
"Keep em comin gleep glop"
"Learn how to read!"
These are just off the top of my head, if I could remember everything they would undoubtedly change.

Good questions. Here are my answers!
1. (TIE.) Wishing Well and Titannica party ("You're ALLL Gay.)
2. Sci-Fi skit when the ending is Benny Hill, which I actually loved. Prior to that, didn't like it. (Glupglocks.)
3. David standup, Bob producer/director.
4. Vince Vaughn, sheep herder.
5. Can't say.
6. Too many.
7. Hmmmmm.
8. Blowjob Exec's or the, "Wishing Well," charactors.
9. Bad extras.
10. Love the opening theme song.
11. Jill Talley
12. "You're ALLL Gay." "It's just a WIG." "A NICKEL holder," from the movie. ""We want a blow job." "...Near the Santa's Villiage on route 59..."

5. Least favorite?
Well, I wouldn't go that far. I mean, there's a whole WORLD of sicker shit out there! Kiddy porn, bestiality, scat... But I suppose when you see some of the really SICK B&D stuff, some of it can be just as bad.
10. Best song in the show?
"neAt; mAnAgeAble: piles" (http://artists.iuma.com/site-bin/mp3gen/35046/IUMA/Bands/pAper_chAse,_the_the_paperchase/audio/pAper_chAse,_the_the_paperchase_-_neAt_mAnAgeAble_piles_feat._will_johnson.mp3) by a band called the pAper chAse. That wasn't TECHNICALLY "in" the show exactly, but it's a kickass song.
11. Hottest cast member?
I dug those alien chicks from "The New San Francisco". Sarah's kinda too obvious. What about Jill in a leotard as Grown-up-Superstar with her Tallies bouncin' around? And Becky from Season 4 was pretty hot. And don't forget the drooling Mary Lynn! Hey, don't judge me!
It's weird, I'm not at all into gettin' all hot & bothered over models or actresses or anything like that, but funny chicks are hot. In a strange way I think I'm sicker than the guys who are all into Pam Anderson or whomever. It's like I need to respect them in order to allow them to even be in my fantasy. That's not a very male thing to do, is it?
12. Top five (or ten) favorite quotes/lines.

I'll do what I can based on Seasons 1-3 (which I have right here with me) and what little I've seen and still remember from Season 4:
1. What is your favorite Mr. Show sketch? Pretty much anything that involved a lot of music such as TTOMO, "Jeepers Creepers - Semi-Star", and Dickie Crickets. Can't think of one favorite now.
2. Least favorite? I'm not a big fan of The Ex-Siamese Twins as a whole or The Hanged Man, but I don't hate them.
3. Bob or David? I feel they both have their strong points.
4. Favorite non-B&D cast member? Either Jay or John. Jay has a wide range of awesome characters, while John's anger is second only to Bob's (perfect example: Creepy Peeping Videos).
5. Least favorite? I agree with what Julie said about Brett Paesal.

"No shit."
"I ain't afraid of no rollycoaster!"
"Please don't kill me." (great read)
"Hi daddy. I'm dying."
"Tricycles would be bicycles. Whoever heard of a bicycle that's crazy!"
"I was in Italy, and then I took a balloon up my ass to Spain."
"I don't know what possessed me."
"This is a museum not a babysitting place."
And I love the way David says "Cool!" in Titanicca.

I think PUNT's right about this site exploding once season 4's released.
OK, here's a not so good question to add:
Favorite Set/Location of any Mr. Show sketch?
I like the desert with that cool cliff that David was on in "Jeepers Creepers" and the Druggachusettes set. That office room with the huge table that Tom sat at was cool too.
Here's some more quotes:
"Are you gonna behave?! ARE- YOU- GONNA- BE-HAVE?!"
"Victor fix."
"Dead... all dead."
and what does Bob say to the special guest on the talk show in the lifeboat? Something like, "You island non-remembering mother fucker".
apotatojudge
09-11-2004, 10:38 PM
I am trying to remember as best I can, but I think it was something more like, "You patty Prince no-island remembering motherfucker."
I wanna say there is another word after Prince?
FUCK NASCAR.
The word after Prince is 'lookin.'
I'll say that again, 'lookin.'

The setting for Jeepers Creepers is cool, but I still hate that sketch. (remember I never saw the original so I have nothing to compare it to)
"It too hot, Is Victor to fix the sun?"
Tatiana the Transvestite weather girl is also funny as hell, mainly because my roommate dated a girl named Tatiana.
I always liked the setting of the Biosphere too.
And I love how they make fun of Ronnie Dobbs's mansion and how fucking shitty it looked.

Oh also, this doesn't really fall into any category... but
favorite t-shirt:
Hug Therapy - the shirt David is wearing when he is sending in his video complaint " I never, ever! Never! nerver!"
Great t-shirt.

And porkchop sandwiches.

Jay's outfit in the New San Fransisco is terrific. Those assless chaps and leopard cup really make the outfit.
I also like the hair they always seem to put on David's nipples whenever he is shirtless.
And even though I didn't really like the sketch, Bob as Sulu with the leotard on. Awesome!

They're Kingston natives, so they'll know how to rock (in and out of the prison I'm sure). 38 years old, never kissed a girl.
Windsor is crap, but my friend moved there, now he's in Oshawa.... big improvement .... errr...
The Hull scene is pretty much dead. They tore the strip down about 7 years ago... never been the same.
You're almost better off in Pembroke or Petawawa!

Hey Julie, I think you missed the debate on "would bringing back Mr. Show be good or bad?"
Thoughts on the idea of new episodes?
terris
09-17-2004, 11:53 AM
i think it would be quite good
granted it may not have the same feel as the old stuff, but give them a few episodes and theyd have their stride back
now i have another question to ask
what would you think if someone made a show which was almost the exact same format as mr show
sketches that are taped and live, they flow in and out, they dont rely on repeating characters, and it has nerdy yet edgy humour, would you A) enjoy the shit out of it, who cares if mr show used that forum so did monty python. B)hate it for not being creative enough to think of its own format. or C) make a comment about how mr show used that format as well but enjoy the show regardless.
the reason i ask is because i really want to do a show like this, obviously it could never reach the audience mr show did, but id like to know how it would be received by mr show fans
agent_PUNT
09-17-2004, 03:55 PM
Me and my writing partners already wrote a pilot episode of that exact idea. I openly admit that it is "heavily influenced by Mr. Show and KiTH"... infact I wrote that on the first page while describing the show.
Aslong as all the ideas are original then it's a great idea. I think all sketch comedy shows should be linked, seamless.... I think it takes more talent and imagination to do it that way.
If the links are all shitty as "pull out of a tv set" or "pull out of a picture frame" then I'm sure everyone would agree you're taking the easy way out and it's not really a link as much as an excuse to say "see they are all linked".
Terris my man, we are live almost close enough that we should be talking more about this. Do you have anything written out?
apotatojudge
09-17-2004, 04:24 PM
I don't like the "idea" of bringing "Mr. Show" "back."
It would seem forced and I don't think anyone (especially them dudes) would enjoy it as much. Plus it'd be hard to get EVERYONE back together, and what the fuck is a Mr. Show without Jay or John?
The idea of a similar show that's good is great.
If it's shitty then it's terrible.
3v3+Z
09-18-2004, 12:38 AM
I've often heard it said that one of the hardest things to do when you're creating a sketch comedy show is to figure out how fit everything together and make it look like one show. The Kids in the Hall were able to establish kind of a rhythm to their show by playing the distinctive music of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet over footage of The Kids just basically horsing off. With SCTV, obviously it was all at a little TV station. With Python, Mr. Show, & The State, they had the links. Although I remember hearing that with Python, it was often an excuse to just END a sketch when they ran out of funny rather than forcing a tidy way to wrap it up in the form of a punchline that was the least funny thing in the sketch. It seemed the Mr. Show-ers were a little disappointed with the fact that they couldn't come up with a proper ending to the "Gay Son" sketch. But most of their sketches DO seem to "end". The Upright Citizens Brigade seemed to take things a step further by figuring out a way to tie EVERYTHING together at the end of the show. (By the way, where the FUCK are the other two seasons on DVD???) And Mad TV manages to tie everything together by making it all suck.
I thought I had a point here, but instead I seem to just be stating shit that's obvious to anyone who likes sketch comedy enough to post here. I guess what I wanted to say was, be original. But don't get so hung up on being original that you forget to make it GOOD. It's fine to marry your own unique slant on things with another show, like Mr. Show, so you can produce your own beautiful, unique offspring with characteristics of both parents. But when you get into cloning, things start becoming a little creepy.
And now for something... completely... LINE?
[FUCK! I should have just brought in The General to put a stop to this after the first sentence!]

Why do you always end your most insightful and informative posts with self-deprecating remarks? Are you ashamed of your intelligence?
Also, you left out SNL. How do they tie it together? I suspect they use the same method as Mad TV.

Yeah, I left out SNL. That one's not as easy. It's just a STYLE, really. You can pretty much tell if a sketch was from SNL out of context. The style has changed over the years. Sometimes it's been a subtle evolution, sometimes it's been quite drastic. But they DID go out of their way in the beginning to make the show stand out from other stuff on TV. I wanna say that they had some writers from Laugh In who had a bunch of ideas left over that they weren't allowed to use before. I could be wrong on that. But I KNOW I've heard that there were sketches that were rejected in the beginning for no other reason than they were "too Carol Burnett". I think I've mentioned that before here. I think I've also mentioned that they've now come full circle with people cracking up so much during sketches. But it always has its own STYLE. You can pretty much pick up on not only the fact that it's from SNL, but what ERA. But it's kind of like the statute of limitations has expired for really QUESTIONING the format of SNL. It just is what it is. And MAYBE it's actually more successful at being whatever it wants to be than any other sketch comedy show. Or maybe no other sketch comedy show has lasted long enough to stretch out that much. And maybe it's not really fair to compare shows with a consistent (or relatively so) cast to the revolving door of SNL.
I've just said absolutely nothing.
Than you! Thank you! And I'd like to dedicate my latest self-deprecating closing remarks to my man Sethy!

What are you talking about, wig? That was his real hair, remember??
10. "You've got to follow your balloon"
Did anyone watch the commentary where Paul F. makes note that this song turns into Modern English's "I'll Stop the World and Melt with You"? The song gets stuck in my head on a daily basis, but it's Paul's version. "You've got to follow your balloon, ...you've seen some changes and it's getting better all the time."
It's really the same exact fucking song.
Word.

Pre-taped Call in Show is amazingly brilliant.
I still don't mind 24. I like it. Except I think Bob doesn't really "find" his mob boss voice.
I can't believe I'm going to have to rent Jesus Christ Superstar just so that I can "get" a Mr. Show joke.
Fuck.
The Talk Show in a Boat.... fucking hilarious. When the audience member starts to raise the roof... I fucking lost it.
And that "no island remembering mother fucker"... awesome. awww shit.
oh and the Monks vs. Fat Kids... christ that's funny shit.

1, 2. Favourite Sketch - Lotsa contenders, but I have to go with "Pre-Taped Call-In Show" for its complexity & execution. Least fave: "The Joke: The Musical" for too many reasons to go into here.
3. Bob or David? David. But I loved how Bob endowed certain characters (Victor the landlord, Nostradamus, Reghit) with genuine pathos. But David...aw hell, how can I choose?!
4, 5. Supporting character - Another toughie. I'll say Jill Talley, just because it's easy to overlook a woman (just ask Fran), and because she could seemingly play ANY part flawlessly. Least fave: Jack Black, not for lack of talent, but just because of my hatred for "The Joke" again. (Not crazy about "Jeepers Creepers" either.)
6, 7. Link - Best one is the "Try Again" video linking "Titannica" and "Pre-Taped...", with "Ka-ching!" a VERY close second. (Incidentally, I think "Bush Is A Pussy" has the greatest, most organic links of any episode as a whole - not a bad one in the bunch!)
Worst: Notwithstanding the fact that a few Season 4 sketches seemingly have NO link at all, the lamest link I can think of is "Swearin' To G-d" > "Rolling In It" > "Landlords". "Hennessy Brothers Apple Butter" is pretty bad too, but I like it, for some reason.
8, 9. Character - I just love Reghit in "Operation Hell On Earth" and his inexplicable puppy-dog devotion to white supremacist Ken. ("The cleansing raainnn!!")
Least favourite: "Superpan" is maybe the most beloved classic Mr. Show sketch that I really don't like, and that's because Ernie is just too creepy for me. (Tho I do love his one really psychopathic "how the dead do dance" line, which I'm too lazy to look up & quote properly!)
10. Song - "Mouthful Of Sores" by Brian Wil- sorry, make that Willups Brighton
11.Hottest - If I were a woman or gay, I'd probably say Jay Johnston. But I'm not, so it's Mary Lynn Rajskub. I just loved the way she'd scrunch up her face!
12. Quotes (from memory, possibly inaccurate)
"He is a hunter, an explorer, a novelist, and an adventurer; a travelaire, an explorist, and a noveler!"
"It's pumpkininny!"
"I totally believe in dragons now!"
"He said he would be willing to do a reunion photo, but only under any circumstances."
"Why don't you set your phaser to 'shut up'?"
"A lot of people think a lot of things about Hawaii!"
"All this money goes to Swears For Cares, a non-profit organization committed to raising money through swearing."
"Sad songs are the keys to get our tears out of eye-jail"
"WHO DARES QUESTION RYAN DORN??!!"
"The movie opened in 1978 on over 1000 screens nationwide, and you are the first ones to see it!"
