I have fond memories of "The Muppet Show", but, in retrospect, I guess a lot of it was stolen from other stuff ("Monty Python", "Laugh In", TONS of cover songs...). Actually, "You Can't Do That On Television" contained a great deal of rip-offs as well. Maybe we should put together a "MASTER Show", with sketches directly ripped off from "Mr. Show"! "Change for a Dollar", "24", "The Audition", "Lie Detector", "Mayostard/Mustardayonnaise", "The Bad News Breakers", you get the idea.
But that's not what this thread is about.
I just came across the name of one of the pilots for "The Muppet Show". There were TWO, and they both aired. (I think, and I think.) The first was called "The Muppets Valentine Show". No big deal there. The second was called "The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence (http://www.muppetcentral.com/guides/episodes/tms/pilots/2_sex_and_violence.shtml)"!! Strange title for what became essentially a KIDS show, and from someone who had already been doing "Sesame Street" for a good five or six years! I knew Jim Henson had done stuff on the EARLY "NBC's Saturday Night". LIVE" because ABC was airing a show called "Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell". But you all know that, right? And that's not what this thread is about.] I think I read that they didn't much care for the "Muppet" stuff on SN(L), though. I guess that was pretty tame stuff. I don't know. I just thought "Sex and Violence" seems like an odd title, too look at it AFTER seeing all this kid's stuff he did. Maybe that old hippie got TRAPPED in the kid's stuff. Who KNOWS what kind of whacky shit he had up his sleeve? (Seriously, do you know? 'Cuz I'd like to find out, so...)
I was also looking for information on some song I remember someone doing on the show where some guy said "hell" repeatedly, and even had some MUPPETS singing along! I thought that was odd when I was a kid. "Am I supposed to be watching this? Am I going to GO to hell now?" Well, I found the song. I'm also curious how they altered Queen's song "Bicycle Race" on "The Great Space Coster" to get around blasphemous and drug-glorifying lyrics. But that's not what this thread is about.
