I've never tried the drug, but i don't much care for the song.

No major loss there. His music sucked and he strikes me as probably the biggest asshole that ever lived. You can't tell me, with a straight face, that Superfreak is a good song. It's shite! The only reason why people even give a shit about it is because Hammer sampled it and made it more popular than it ever was beforehand.

May he donate his body to a pack of necrophiliacs.

As I always say, if I want funk I'll take Average White Band, if I want reggae I'll take Genesis and if I want rock n roll I'll take Elvis. Fuck that Eminem dude though, he's just rude.

I'm sorry to hear this guy is dead mind you, I read he was planning a movie of his life, who knows what cinematic masterpiece we lost out on there eh?

Seriously his music was fucking awful and he (or at least his public persona) was a half-bright burnout one-hit wonder in denial with a bad haircut. He had less class than even the most low-rent Vegas lounge singer, and he was about as likable as a politician. Listening to Rick James talk or sing or do pretty much anything that reminded of his existence was about as much fun as inhaling a scorpion. Good riddance.

That episode of Chapelle's Show was still pretty funny though.

His "public persona"? Come on. You saw him at the end of his game. Granted he was a coked out freak but his music was well respected at the time (he was more than just "super freak"). And look cptplanet, no disrespect to you, i've read all your post and you're a funny dude/dudette?, but according to your profile you weren't born till 4 years after his songs were hits. I would say then that you cannot comment on the quality of the songs or him as a person because you have no context. ie that's the kind of shit that was going on at the time. I can say the beetles were shit and a bunch of drugged out hippies but the statement wouldn't carry much weight as i wasn't around then (exceptions -- people who have studied music history-- and I don't just mean "I own a lot of cd's/mp3s).
Give the guy a fuckin' break.

The Beatles are TIMELESS! It doesn't matter if you were alive when their music came out or not. It just holds up. You don't have to "study" anything to get it. Sure, there are individuals who genuinely don't like them, but nobody has come CLOSE to the broadness of their appeal in the history of pop music.

Age shouldn't be important. "...the kind of shit that was going on at the time" shouldn't be important. Truly great music transcends all that.

That said, I didn't think "Super Freak" sounded really moldy or anything. Granted it's no "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"...

Anyway, I was in Sears one day several years ago and I noticed "Mary Jane" playing on the Muzak. I got a chuckle out of that. Somebody doesn't know "who" "Mary Jane" is.

Dumbest Chain Of Logic Ever:

If you were not alive while something occured, you are in no way qualified to have a valid opinion about it as you'll never understand it's context.

Hennessy, this is riduculous! You present a philosophy and only feel the need to apply it to music. Think of the bigger picture man. You CAN'T apply your lame brained logic only to music; you'd have to include movies, books, politics, fucking vaudeville... anything that existed when man existed. You're a dope.

"Sorry Klaus, I'd really like to let you in on this conversation about Beethoven, but I'm afraid you simply weren't alive between 1770 and 1827. Your opinions are irrelevant. Sorry. Hey, wait a minute! There's a discussion about disco and punk rock over there! You were alive then, though only a toddler, but join in !!"

I say we don't bother arguing such a hopeless debate. Personally I think Britney Spears should be locked in a cupboard with the yorkshire ripper and a large serrated knife (purely on a professional level of course, I wouldn't make judgements on her personality). But there's millions out there who think she's great, millions of fucking..stupid..morons. You know what? Rick James can (come back to life and then) eat my shit and die, he fucking sucked and I hate him.

No offence Hennessy.

edit: I was only joking, my condolences to him and his.

Cant you guys see that this Rick James thread is tearing us apart!!!

Did I like his music? Not in the least. Did I find him an annoying prick of a man in his public persona? Indeed I did. Do I care that Rick James is dead? No more than I cared about his life. Do my personal opinions make his death less tragic? I don't think so. I don't think that wishing death on someone outside of the realm of humor and cynicism is a positive thing.

If you thought that I was seriously comparing listening to a Rick James song with inhaling a scorpion then I hope you get into a car accident on a desolate stretch of highway and suffer for hours before being mercifully shuffled off this mortal coil.

On a more serious note, I'm going to go over to the cemetary he's buried at with a battery-powered boombox full of his greatest hits and cut a funky rug all over his grave. Cuz I'm supah-freak-aay-OW! Who's in?

OK guys, look, this is becoming a classic flame war for which no one can possibly win.

My disregard for his death has nothing to do with his awful music, his propensity for beating the shit out of women, or his rampant drug use. No, I disregard his death because I'm a raging racist.

Hide out in the jungle with Dennis Hopper until he's voluntarily slain by Martin Sheen?

You did neither. And both. Anyway, it's a link to a piece of a song by some local cat named Dick Siegel. Second best song ever, just behind Ween's "Here There Fancypants".
