My radio show, The Sound of Young America in Santa Cruz, California, is an award-winning talk show dedicated largely to comedy. I've spent a bunch of time encoding and uploading some interviews, bits, and so forth, so that folks can hear them outside of the Scruz.... visit our site (http://www.splangy.com/radio/) and click on "Sound." We've got interviews with folks like Slovin & Allen, Patton Oswalt, and Steve from Blue's Clues up right now... and more on the way. And please let me know what you think of the show.

Are you one of the DJs? That bit where all three of you were talking all old-timey ("My steam car is just fiiine thank ya.") LITERALLY had me pissing blood.

i wish i had a radio.

I'm Jesse Thorn, "America's Radio Sweetheart." Mine is the main voice you hear during the interviews.

The old-timey bit wasn't me, but I did co-write it with my co-host.

Are you moving out to Santa Cruz? To the Bay Area?

tjamick
07-19-2004, 07:46 PM
yeah, my cousin lives out there and said that if i move out there i could stay with her. i'd like to do stand-up and join a sketch/ improv group out there. also, i was thinking about doing a radio show. a friend and i had made a hole bunch of great really bizzare radio bits.

Man I wish I didn't hate California so much or else I would totally move out there too. Not that Tucson is any better.

i'm not a huge fan either, but its really the place to be for good comedy.

I thought a lot of comics were coming from Boston. I don't really like the East Coast either. Vegas is pretty much the only place I feel at home, but that's where comics go to die. It's like comedy Florida.

do you know of any good comics that may be there next week? i'd like to see a good bit of comedy while out there.

hey i got a few questions about your show. first, when does it air? i know i saw it listed on your site, but when i went back to cheack i couldnt remember where i saw it. secondly, when are you going to post more full shows up there?

thanks man.

edit: never mind my first question. i used my eyes and found it.

I may well do that... basically, it's a lot of work for me to add anything up there, so I've only been doing it in spurts... I'm hoping to train my kid brother to do it, right now.

And for anyone who cares to know... the show airs live Thursdays from four to six PM pacific time...

I'm not sure if Penn & Teller are still doing shows in Vegas (because of Bullshit!, their HBO series), but I've seen them a couple times, and it was always worth it. They're really friendly guys too.

List of comedy acts playing in Vegas.

EDIT: Oh yeah, George Wallace and Rita Rudner put on pretty good shows. Nothing brilliant of course, but it's worth it if you can get your parents to pay for the tickets.

And if Kevin Nealon is playing, AVOID HIM LIKE THE MOTHERFUCKNIG PLAGUE. Seriously. I've never seen anyone who was supposed to be a famous comedian eat shit on stage that bad before. He was using like, weekend update jokes from fucking 1994, and he totally couldn't get the audience into anything he was saying. He stunk up the joint. Huuuuge waste of ticket money.

Also, if you're feeling like you're in an art-fag mood, check out Cirque du Soleil. They have two shows playing in Vegas (definitely on the pricey side, but it's a pretty spectacular spectacle).

Ok I'm done being your tour guide so go eat shit.

do you wanna fight or do you not know about vibe tv?

YoungAmerican

A) It's Vice TV, based on the magazine Vice, which is a free lifestyle magazine mainly in NYC/Toronto (but also anywhere trucker hats were sold two years ago).
B) Don't count out Nealon. He has some fantastic jokes... you may have just seen his set tailored for a "Vegas audience."

YoungAmerican, how do you like working in radio? Was it a hard job to get? Is it surrounded by stifling censorship and beaurocracy? Does it pay well? Has it ever gotten you laid? I'm still trying to weigh career options, so any advice you can give me would be totally far out of this world.

Also if I'm just being a nosey cocksucker who needs to watch his mouth before it gets me in trouble, go ahead and say so.

YoungAmerican

I've been out of school for a year, and I haven't been able to get a paying job in radio yet. I do TSOYA for free... the station is licensed to my alma mater. I also work on a Public Radio Internation show called West Coast Live (http://www.wcl.org).

Outside of the fact that I can't get a job, radio is great. The best part, for me, is that you can create such a high quality product without any staff, money, etc.

There is no censorship on our show at all... there are of course FCC standards for decency, but we consciously avoid working blue anyway, since there's so much of it on the radio as it is.

And while I've never gotten laid because of the show (perhaps laid more enthusiastically by my long-time girlfriend), I can honestly say that my former co-host, "Big Time" Gene O'Neill did. A girl called in to win a contest on our show... but said she would only take the tix if Gene went with her. He did, and they did (it). They went out for like six months.

By the way, I uploaded another full show.

It's also a great way for ugly people to get into show business, right? Because that's my main concern. I've got a voice like Barry White and a face like Barry Goldwater.

Ugly people can always do standup or write, of course.

Just remember that ugliness in the defense of liberty is no vice.

“Comics Stand Up”

Politics is no laughing matter? Wrong!

August 14th, a group of San Francisco sketch and standup comics stand up for what they believe in, with a jokefest for a cause, “Comics Stand Up.”

“To paraphrase Rakim,” says event organizer and radio talker Jesse Thorn, “We ain’t no joke, and we’re about to let the mic smoke. We’re at a crucial juncture in this country, and if we can tell some jokes and make a difference, then it’s incumbent upon us to do it.”

Comics Stand Up features a variety of comedians, from newcomers (award-winning sketch from Prank the Dean) to veterans (SF legend Mike Meehan) to authors (Harmon Leon, “The Harmon Chronicles”) to films (political shorts from The Partisan Jab.) What ties all these jokesters together is their serious commitment to creating a better country for all of us.

Date: Saturday, August 14th
Time: 8 PM
Location: Off-Market Theater, 965 Mission at Fifth St., San Francisco

Who: Sketch comedy from Prank the Dean, standup comedy from Mike Meehan (the Meehan Bros, Comedy Central), Harmon Leon (author of “The Harmon Chronicles), Jordan Morris (KZSC FM), Mike Spiegelman, plus short films from The Partisan Jab (as seen on musicforamerica.org)

What: Comics Stand Up is a comedy benefit for regime change at home. All proceeds from the evening’s program will benefit America Coming Together, a partisan non-profit organization working to register underrepresented voters in swing states.

WOW your show is really funny and causes me great pleasure generally. I really like the times when you guys are fading down a record but haven't started talking, but my favorite part is the recipe corner. will you post that gypsy joker recipe again? ya just can't buy fresh speed like home-made anymore, and you guys read the ingredients off so fast!
But seriously, thanks for all the trouble putting the show together. I live in the bay area so i get all of your fire dancing references, and nag champa jokes but i would listen even if i lived somewhere else you guys are that good!
