If you've heard it let us know how it is. His thing in the Onion last week was great.

I don't suppose you could rip it to MP3's and allow me to pirate it could you?

I was actually just about to think that. It seems like the people responsible for pirating stuff and putting it on the internet have really shitty taste.

I think I said something about this before not to long ago, but I'll repeat it and maybe even add more to it. Back when Napster & AudioGalaxy were in their PRIME, I could find pretty much ANYTHING I could DREAM of!!! Long out of print? Didn't matter! Vinyl only? Didn't matter! Teeny-tiny new releases that flew under the radar of even the hippest* music magazines and know-it-all indie record shop clerks? I could find 'em with Napster or A.G. even when I couldn't find a single record store on or off line that could get 'em for me!!! They HAD leveled the playing field, more or less. My theory is that THIS is the REAL reason the big labels and a handful of artists wanted that shit shut down! If people get a chance to hear that there are actually much BETTER things out there than the shit being shoved down their throats, the major labels are DONE FOR! They had to put a stop to that before too many people got too used to finding the shit from outside of the mainstream. It was never really about whether or not Metallica got paid. Not because their songs were being "stolen" anyway. They were worried that they weren't gonna get paid 'cuz people are gonna discover that there's BETTER shit out there. Betcha I can find Metallica now MUCH easier than I could find, say, Congratulations on Your Decision to Become a Pilot, just to throw out a strange (REAL) band name.

And as long as I'm rollin' on this, I was checking out what's available on the iTunes Music Store the other day. I was looking for a couple of Monkees songs. All they had was ONE "hits" type compilation! I was looking for NON-hits!!! I know this business model is still in its infancy, but this just seems like a HUGE mistake! These are just music FILES! I know they kind of take up space TECHNICALLY, but not like CDs do! And you only have to "stock" ONE of everything! You go to a record store, they're not gonna wanna stock multiple copies of EVERY Monkees album! I'm the only idiot who would even WANT something other than a hit collection, and I already HAVE the shit that I want. EXCEPT for a couple songs or so! That's the kind of void something like the iTunes Store SHOULD be filling! 'Cuz I AIN'T gonna RE-buy 18 songs I already PAYED FOR to get ONE SONG I don't have that isn't available anywhere else!!!

Now, WHAT were WE talking about? Oh yeah! PATTON! Haven't heard the new seedily-deedily yet. Sorry. He does strike me as being similar to Cross somehow though. In fact, I get kind of confused sometimes as to who did what bit in their respective HBO specials. "Oh yeah!", I'll say to myself. "Patton did the bit about 'Piss Drinkers Weekly'! David did the bit about 'The World's Filthiest Ball-Draining Cum Mag'!"

*Check this shit out: My spellcheck thing-deal wanted me to change the word "hippest" to "WHIPPETS"! Isn't that bizarre? It's not hip enough to know some pretty mainstream slang from 40+ years ago, but "whippets"??? "Yeah, we know all ABOUT whippets, maaaaaan!" To be fair, I think that has another meaning though.

whippet

Anyway, I understand what you're saying. I understood it the first time too, but you make an even better point this time around.

As for Patton, I'm not all too familiar with his work. It's not that I've never heard of him, I just don't remember seeing or hearing anything of his. Then again, I may have and just didn't realize it. That's really how I came across Mr. Show: not knowing what the hell it was! So, I guess now's a good time to start becoming familiar with his stuff.

OK, back again. I know who he is. I just needed to see a picture because I couldn't remember what he looked like.

Interesting note, Patton has used the phrase 'ball draining cum whores' in his act too.

I TOTALLY agree with what you're saying about the conspiracy though. Before the big crackdown by the RIAA, big names like Alanis Morisette were stood next to unknown but equally talented performers like Sport. Now, under the control of megamillion coporate industry companies like Apple, they can limit what the average internet user is able to find..and see.

And all this was able to happen under the false belief that big name rockstars were being forced to eat their coccyx due to so little money being spent in record stores. In reality it was because they enjoyed the taste.

(This is all very funny if you do it in my crazy BBC reporter type-voice)

I really enjoyed it. He is really good at working w/ an unruly audience. He does a a whole bit on some drunken suggestion that he chug his glass of wine. ( hear the bit on his website) more goofy than DC, more cynical than BO.
i will listen to it more than i will "its not funny" and i loved that.
Never really sat and watched "King of Queens" but i suppose i should try at least.

If anyone's looking for some (free) Patton Oswalt, there's a thread a few forums down started by some guy that does a radio show, and he's had Patton on it a couple of times. Lots of filler, but Patton lands some pretty good riffs.

Steve I didn't know you were an indie wanker! Wanna start a thread and bitch about Modest Mouse or talk about how cool pitchforkmedia is?

I thought is was ok, but wasn't blown away. I've only listened to it once. I'm withholding final judgement until I listen to it at least one more time.

You should check it out for yourself. If you have the cash, support Patton by buying it! :)

Comedians are among the few people in the entertainment industry that I will actually go out of my way to support, as they work harder and are appreciated less than any other group of entertainers. Unfortunately I have about 7 to my name (if you don't factor in the negative balance on my checking account), so in conclusion please help me pirate this thing y'all.

I've seen it on SoulSeek. It's pretty good, but I don't know if I'd recommend buying it. I'm sure Patton's doing alright for himself, what with the King of Queens and all.

When it comes to Modest Mouse, the less produced they are, the BETTER they are! Check out some of their older tracks and find out why they GOT a big enough following to get signed by a major.

I'm open to Mac file sharing program suggestions as well. I've been using something called Acquisition. Not terribly happy with it, but at least I could get it to work a little. (I'm not so bright, ya understand.) There's a site called ZeroPaid.com (http://www.zeropaid.com/) that has info on p2ps for various platforms. I don't see a Mac version of SoulSeek there, but I swear someone gave me a link at some point to some instructions for getting SoulSeek to work on a Mac. Thing is, I don't wanna jump through hoops. I just want a program that works. I shouldn't have to think about it.

BitTorrent looks interesting, but I have to look into it a little more still.

By the way, HOLD OFF on getting your new Mac for a little while, if AT ALL possible!!! The next generation iMac is supposed to be announced AND released NEXT MONTH! I guess you might be safe if you were looking for something portable, but if you were looking into any kind of a desktop model, hang in there a few weeks. You never know what the fuck Steve Jobs is gonna have for us. The rumor mills all seem to think the new iMac is gonna be a G5.

BT is fucking tops, but it's not a Kazaa/Limewire/whatever substitute. You have to download a .torrent file from a web based server to do anything. I'd recommend using suprnova or myspleen.com. Bittorrent is cool because usually the files were created by someone who knows what they're doing (thus higher quality and no Kazaa syndrome), plus you usually get pretty good speeds and it's great for large files like those MST3K episodes you've have your eye on but didn't feel like waiting 2 and a half weeks for.

Also I downloaded Patton's new CD and I'd say he's easily as funny as David Cross. Maybe he's not tackling issues quite as important but come the fuck on. "Your twat smells like a baby's coffin!" That's one of the best lines I've ever heard. He reminds me of old The Pride Is Back-era David Cross. I'd definitely recommend buying it if you have the means. It's nothing short of fucking brilliance and perfection. He's as talented a comic as David Cross and I'm not budging on that one.

Also sometimes good are Torrent Box (http://www.torrentbox.com) and Torrent Reactor (http://www.torrentreactor.net/).

Both of which are completely legal.
