The 60th Venice Film Festival opened yesterday with the world premiere of Woody Allen's "serious comedy", Anything Else.

The showing of the film, which Allen describes as a "love story between two extremely neurotic people", was accompanied by his first appearance at the Venice festival.

Anything Else, the story of two gag writers in New York, stars Allen as a man terrorised by the notion that there will be another Holocaust, to the point that he is ready to seize upon violence as a form of self-defence.

The movie stars Allen along with Christina Ricci, Jason Biggs, Stockard Channing, Jimmy Fallon, and Danny DeVito.
