Hi. This is my first ever post here, as I have just now joined this forum. I am currently writing and acting in a sketch comedy group in St. Louis, Missouri, USA called the NonProphets. Though I will be moving back to Michigan soon and will be trying to start my own group there.
The gist of my reason for joining this group and posting this thread is that I am interested in meeting like-minded people out there. Is anyone else trying to make it on small stages in bars that only hold a maximum of 110 people? Are there other creative folks writing and acting and trying to make people laugh (or at least think), while plugging away at their day jobs?
If so, and you want to either commiserate with someone in the same boat, or (hopefully) you want to work together to figure out the best way(s) to do this thing successfully, please let me know. My goal is to make a living doing this one of these days. I'd like to think that's not such a far-fetched idea.
If this is not the right venue for this sort of discourse let me know, and I will take myself out of the forum. Thank you for your time.

This is a good place to speak up. Let me know when you get back to Michigan, I've been thinking alot about moving there. I also think alot about teen suicide and raping girls on public buses.... I guess that really isn't helpful

I'll be moving back there in just over two weeks, and I'll be living in the Ann Arbor area (Southeastern part of the state). I'm currently looking for talent to work with me on this and a venue in which to perform. If you are interested if/when you get to the area let me know and we can talk. If anyone else who reads this is in (or thinking of moving to) that area, please contact me at kbmacgregor@hotmail.com. Ideally, I want to have a small group of quality folks, consisting of about 4 men and 4 women. Again ideally those involved would be able to write sketches and play a number of different characters (not just impressions, but those don't hurt). This is not a requirment, as I write all the time and have a large number of sketches stocked up already. Mostly what I am looking for are people who work well together, are creative and talented, and above all love to perform and make people laugh.
I read recently that sketch comedy is on the rise. I intend to ride that wave all the way to the top.

Please do. Sorry I took so long to get back to you on that. I have been trying to find a job and place to live and get ready to move, on top of my day job and last few shows. I've been kinda busy. Tomorrow is actually my "signature show" with The NonProphets...every week we do 24 sketches in a random order. This week every single sketch is one I wrote, and I will be acting in 21 of them! I'm unbelievable psyched about it. Do people still say "psyched"? Or is it "pumped" now? Or am completely, woefully out of the loop of what's hip? ...Do they still say "hip"?

If anyone on this forum lives in or around the St. Louis area, I invite you to come to the show tomorrow. For details, go to www.nonprophets.com.

Keepin' it real,
Ken MacGregor

you should check the mr. show forum at aspecialthing.com. there are a lot of people there that would be really helpful compared the few here.

hey man, i just joined for the same reasons you did. i just spent the last 2 years
on my first movie TEENAGERS FROM MARZ. its 75% sketch comedy. also graffiti, music videos, and other crazy shit. i've recently started a new movie with the same concept. so you perform live at bars? i respect that alot.
