If I tell a joke about Kurt Cobain then I guess it's alternative.

But if I tell a joke about Kurt Cobain eating airline food it's not alternative.

If I tell a joke about Captain Kirk Cobain from the Enterprise, then that could be anti-humour.

Was that a thousand words?

Where's that clip of that comic doing a joke in his style, then mock Dane Cook style? That would pretty much sum this up.

As for alternative comedy, I guess I would define it the same way that people used to identify alternative music when it first reared its ugly head. I would say its humor still using the age old element of suprise, but breaking new molds, redefining old formats, and testing new boundries as culture changes.

For instance, when I was a child, back when Whitesnake was considered ground breaking music, and pteradons flew around my suburb...Bill Maher broke some boundries by saying something 'sucked' on live tv. He was actually fined a buttload of money, look it up. Only a handful of years later, Janet Jackson showed some chocolate fat, and was also fined an amount of money some would call a buttload. Today, Bill saying something 'sucked' and being fined seems laughable, but back then we all dropped our jaws. Then Bruce Willis said bitch on Moonlighting, and we all shit our pants, and the pteradons died out instantly.

The point being, alternative humor challenges old formats, stretches the limits of what can be done, shocks and redefines, and actually ends up changing popular culture. It ends up after a time defining the things that will be allowed to be said and done a generation from now, when the crack babies of the 80's become CEOs and appear on Oprah. When the 'n' word becomes acceptable for whites to use. When just enough time passes for people to make Holocaust jokes, because after enough time, its no longer real, just as its completely acceptable today to make fun of those assholes that died on the Titanic, or the stupid dickheads that had the brass balls to die of the Plague.

Just for a moment, as an aside, Id like to take a moment of silence for the Plague victims of the dark ages. (The Doctor pours some of his 40 ounce on the front porch.)

Dumbasses. Spontaneous-generation believing pricks. How's it feel now? That right bitches. Feels like cold wet dirt and plague dont it?
What was I talking about? I dont know. Alternative comedy is about being a snob, or something, just like once it was cool to listen to the Grateful Dead, then Blues Traveler, then Dave Matthews, and then Mayer, or whoever, until the next laid back new wave magican comes along, and, like totally redefines the 4/4 perfect time C major music scale.
