Hey ya'll

I just happened upon this place as I was doing a google search for sites and communities that might be helpful to me as I attempt to start developing a stand up act.

Now I'm not sure what exactly this site is but it is dedicated to stand up, so that's a start.

How many here either do stand up or study it?
For those that have done or studied stand up, what suggestions do you have? (please note I haven't done my first open mike yet)

Now many comics talk about getting into a rhythm, that stand up is like music, would anyone have anything more specific to say about this?

Also, every comedian talks about reading the audience. How do you do this and can you talk specifically about what that means. I understand I'm not going to use jokes about prison lovin' to a group of nuns. I'm looking for more practical advice and examples would be fantastic.

Thanks all, I hope I've found the right place for stand up comic's development.

I think this kid I knew in middle school took Yuk Jitsu on the weekends.

It's no use analysing what makes a good stand-up comedian and following clinical notes on it won't help you when you're starting out. Just watch other comedians while developing your own act in front of an audience. Find your own style and your own rhythm.

Note that this doesn't include basic etiquette like turning up on time, waiting your turn and using your own common sense as to which of your bits you do. That's all pretty much mandatory, unless you're a troubled genius or something.

Am I right guys?

don't worry about all that stuff yet.

the first few times up just try and get comfortable holding the mic, keeping your head up and being relaxed.

watch the guys/girls you admire and figure out what they are doing that works.

be yourself, have fun.
