I recently bought The Harder They Come and tried playing it, but there was a scratch on the dvd halfway through. The disc is out of print, but I decided to try asking for a replacement. This was three weeks ago and I finally got a response saying that since it was out of print, I could mail it back and get another Criterion title (presumably of equal value and not out of print). What do you guys think? I was thinking M or The Third Man or The Vanishing.

Any recommendations?

I’m a big fan of most Criterion releases, although occasionally the rush to get titles out can result in some pretty bare bones issues. The original Criterion release of Fritz Lang’s “M” was pretty awful. The print was no better than my old VHS version and the “special features” were non- existent. I guess Criterion has re-released “M” and it’s a big improvement in both picture quality and special features. A couple of my recommendations below are also pretty bare bones Criterion releases but the films themselves look fantastic.

Browning Version, The (1951) Directed by Anthony Asquith
Burden of Dreams (1982) Directed by Les Blank
Do the Right Thing (1989) Directed by Spike Lee
F for Fake (1974) Directed by Orson Welles
High and Low (1963) Directed by Akira Kurosawa
Ikiru (1952) Directed by Akira Kurosawa
Kagemusha (1980) Directed by Akira Kurosawa
Peeping Tom (1960) Directed by Michael Powell
Pepe Le Moko (1937) Directed by Julien Duvivier
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) Directed by Peter Weir
Ran (1985) Directed by Akira Kurosawa
River, The (1966) Directed by Jean Renoir
Rules of the Game, The (1939) Directed by Jean Renoir
Rushmore (1998) Directed by Wes Anderson
Samurai Trilogy
-Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954) Directed by Hiroshi Inagaki
-Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955) Directed by Hiroshi Inagaki
-Samurai III: Duel on Ganryu Island (1956) Directed by Hiroshi Inagaki
Story of Floating Weeds, A (1934) and Floating Weeds(1959) Directed by Yasujiro Ozu
Sword of Doom, The (1966) Directed by Kihachi Okamoto
Tin Drum, The (1979) Directed by Volker Schlöndorff
Ugetsu (1953) Directed by by Kenji Mizoguchi
Yojimbo (1961) Directed by Akira Kurosawa

It feels odd not including Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai amongst my recommendations but apparently they’re re-releasing this as well. A two disk edition will replace the old one disk job I own. The original Seven Samurai release is again pretty sparse when it come to special features but it does feature an excellent commentary track by film historian Michael Jeck... and hey it's The Seven Samurai so WTF!?!

I went with F For Fake because I am going to write a paper on it. I hope they get it to me soon.
