Big news from New York!

Tonight’s episode of SNL will (I believe) go down as the very first Live Sketch Comedy show to not attempt any humor whatsoever.

i agree,

the only skit that was the closest to being good was the one where that couple goes to the party- and everyone was from Fosse-

also the "blind Prop-comic" part on the news had so many possibilities- but it bombed bad-

i'll watch the show every week no matter how bad it gets-

A big thank you to Cliff. I've wanted to get my mitts on this knife for a long time and I'm not disappointed. I got to handle a Spyderco Military awhile back and while I really liked it, I was just a little bit disappointed with it. The Rat Trap is what I wanted the Military to be. First off, the weight is perfect for me. The Military was just too light and this knife has just enough heft to feel really good in the hand. It is by no means heavy, it's just right. The blade shape is awesome and it performs extremely well. It chops better than blades much heavier (e.g. Spyderco Manix) and has enough belly to slice and skin very well. You'll notice that Cliff has altered the edge profile slightly (removed the harsh edge leading from the bevel into the blade) and while it may not be pretty, it certainly makes me want to do the same to my blades. I apologize if I'm not able to to express this eloquently or technically enough for you but you'll see when you get it or maybe Cliff can chime in and explain it better. I must admit that I'm a little confused as to whether it's the reprofiling or whether SRKW's S30v stock is just better than Spydercos because the edge retention on the Rat Trap is superb. I've used the Military, Paramilitary, and Manix and they won't do nearly as much as this Rat Trap without a touch-up. I've definitely put the knife through it's paces in the last couple of days and it still effortlessly shaves hair. Impressive to say the least.

Considering this is SRKW's first folder, it is a stellar debut. However, there are some problems. First and foremost is the liner lock. While I've never had a liner lock fail on me or anyone I know personally, it does not inspire confidence in a knife this size and with such obvious performance capabilities. I would definitely like to see this knife with another lock configuration or some type of LAWKS derivative. The liner lock is aggressively textured and I believe that to be an error. It is very easy to move it over if you try and I value my digits just a little bit more than the knife to really try and make it fail in tests. Like I said, I've NEVER had a liner lock catastrophically fail me but I'd hate to see it happen with such a massive and sharp blade as this. That's where I give a point to the Military, even though I had even less confidence in it's liner lock, it had a choil that would squash rather than remove my index finger if it failed. Also, the Military allowed more clip mounting positions which doesn't matter to me but I know alot of you folks get finicky about tip up/down and the Rat Trap only allows tip down carry. The ergonomics are very good but not great; I'd like to see a more pronounced finger guard and the jimping on the back of the blade seems pointless as it is below the (very nice and grippy) G10 scales. This made no sense to me. The jimping is completely obscured and gives your thumb no purchase on the spine of the blade. More pronounced and longer jimping on the blade spine is a definite must.

Obviously, this is a big knife. Big and intimidating. While this has it's advantages, especially in emergency and self defense situations, don't expect the average folk to ignore you when you whip this thing out. People will notice and get nervous. I've had several people refer to it as "a butcher's knife". You might have a hard time justifying it as an EDC. Personally, I wouldn't. It's not something I'd wear to the office but it's light enough, slim enough, and it carries low enough (very low actually) to be with me everywhere but. I think that with a very small bit of refinement, the Rat Trap is going to be a legendary folder. I look forward to hear what you think of it and hope you enjoy handling it as much as I have.

I bet if I inversed the colors on Taint's last post it'd look like the hubble deep field.

Aint that a bitch?

I like to tell myself that there hands are kind of cuffed depending on the host. Zeta Jones is a boring cunt and probably just picked any sketch with dancing and singing.

But that's only the start of it. The show is strait up boring. It needs a format change; it needs to be something special again. They aren’t going to get the feeling of something new they got in the 70's, and they aren’t going to get the camaraderie of the 90's. Yet they seem content to be boring novelty like the 80's.

They need to make it more of a variety show. You know who I think would make a great addition? Nick Lachey.

They need to put Bob Odenkirk in charge of SNL.

Seriously.

And yes, I know it won't happen. But having a few outside consultants that actually know how to write smart sketch comedy would make a huge difference.

Bob Odenkirk said PUSSY

yes-- the show is in big need of re-tooling,

a smaller cast and writing staff, there are 15 cast members- thats insane-

and they have to be more picky about who hosts the show, no one gives a fuck how funny catherine zeta-jones is, and no one is going to say "hey- catherince zeta-jones was on snl- i'm gonna go see zorro"

i also found it funny that they did that "butt cancer" skit- and next week lance armstrong is hosting. that show sounds pretty bad- no one gives a fuck about lance armstrongs funny bone-

i agree, but in reality, they should have writers who can salvage a show no matter who the guest is. I wouldn't care if Catherine Zeta O'Malley was the special guest if all the "skits" were well written.

Bob Odenkirk once told my college town that working with the non-comedic hosts was one of the shittiest parts of writing for SNL.
When Steven Segal hosted back in the early 1990s, he was written into a sketch where he was going to get into a fight with Hans and Frans. Segal refused to do the sketch because his character got beaten up by Hans and Frans and he didn't want to look weak, or something.
Then, Segal insisted on writing his own sketch and refused to host unless it was put in the show. Bob described it as a scene where some corporate execs are talking about how they're gonna make money by raping the environment, then Segal busts in, proceeds to pummel the execs for, oh, about 5 minutes. The scene ends with the execs passed out on the floor and Segal pointing to the camera and saying "THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MESS WITH THE EARTH!"
Then, before he left SNL, Segal fucked one of the interns. David Cross compared it to stealing candy from a retarded baby.

This is really my problem with SNL, Catherine Zeta Jones and celebrities like her. They are so irrationally vein, that they can't handle being the butt of the joke for 90 minutes. A well engineered episode of SNL should be like a celebrity roast in some ways.

Unfortunately, so many celebrities are afraid of having the piss taken out of them that they only part like the boss or the girlfriend or the best friend in sketches. Why do we need Catherine Zeta Jones play a bride who likes to get spanked? Oh, I get it, SHE'S HOT!!! Seriously, all the jokes were either saying that CZJ likes Broadway or is attractive.

It's just really pointless. They should just get rid of the guest host, since they really aren't doing anything. Then again, the current writing staff owns a piece of this blame. They had Steve Carrell on - a guy who's made a career out of making fun of himself - and they did nothing with him. It's so frustrating.

The same thing happens all the time on The Daily Show. God I wish they'd go back to no interviews and an hour long format.
