Does anyone here familiar with the comedian Russell Peters?

Fuck this thread. I haven't been on since friday and I just read the thread about Julie after I started this thread. I'm sorry, I didn't mean any disrespect.

Basically, his schtick is:
"Although I was brought up in a North American middle-class family and sound just like your average white person, my skin is still a little darker than most comedians and one of my parents was from Sri Lanka, so I'll use this to my advantage in the comedy world and form my entire act around how "funny" it is to be one-quarter Indian and complain about how everyone who runs into me thinks I'm a Vishnu-worshipping, lactose-intolerant, convenience store owner (when in fact I'm just a regular guy like everyone else!). And just to make sure the message gets across, I'll talk like Apu from The Simpsons when necessary and point to people in the audience whose skin color also isn't white and tell them how much I can identify with their being a minority in the 21st century struggling with racial stereotypes."
These ethnicity acts were never funny, and I really hope they fade away soon. Maybe in 20 years when there are more browns than whites in the country, they'll actually have to think of something FUNNY to say. Of course, we'll still have to worry about the Jewish acts, the gay & lesbian acts, and the "I-have-a-weight-problem-so-please-laugh-with-me-as-I-talk-about-it" acts.

Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy were pretty funny.

Yeah, I was going to mention those guys as the exceptions but I figured since they didn't form their entire act around being a minority, they don't fall under the "ethnic schtick" category. Plus, I don't think of African-Americans as being ethnic (someone better with vocabulary can confirm this).
And also, Dat Phan didn't co-write Blazing Saddles, and George Lopez wasn't it in Trading Places.

No disagreement there.
George Lopez is awful. The only person worse than him is Carlos Mencia.

I don't understand. Is "Mind of Mencia" a stand-up special or a tv show?
You guys remember "Wanda Does It".

After seeing the commercial for "Mind of Mencia," I now hate Carlos Mencia with the passion of a thousand suns.
He says, "You know what the problem with the world is? Too many stupid people and no one to eat them!"
I hate it when dumb comics try to take on complex issues through oversimplification. That statement is like something Kedzie Matthews would say.

I've never heard of Carlos Mencia, but scotch-romanian is absolutely right about Russell Peters and his schtick; he is comedy AIDS.

He might perform where I work. My boss asked if I'd heard of him, I hadn't so I looked him up. Like all of you I wasn't impressed with what I found, but I thought I would see what people thought.

Anyone who ends a comic set-- ON NATIONAL TV, that will rerun for 10 years at least-- with silience for 911 deserves to get kicked in the throat.

Am I the only one who would have put Dave Chappelle alongside Pryor and Murphy? Also Chris Rock's earlier stand up.
If I am, then rest assured that fuck you.

Also, my friend's father in law was best friends with Pryor and he has a picture on his wall of him at his wedding with Richard Pryor and Miles Davis. It rules.

Definitely. Bring the Pain is probably one of the best specials ever.
Chappelle is close to being on Eddie Murphy's level, except it seems he went nuts too soon.

Goddammit he'll be back. I swear he will.

I think Dave Chappelle's stand-up is much smarter and relevant than anything Eddie Murphy did, which was mostly characters and anecdotes. I'm not saying that Eddie Murphy wasn't hilarious, but I think Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock are closer to Richard Pryor than Eddie Murphy.
I also don't understand this 'Dave Chappelle went crazy' stuff. If anything, I think that getting away from everything for a while is more of a sign of sanity than insanity. It would have been so easy to cash his $50 million, coast on the reputation that the show built for itself over the past two years, and just churn out crap. But instead, he realized that he has the best sketch show, that he now has too many people telling him what he should or shouldn't do, that he was burnt out on both energy and material, and needed time to recharge. Maybe if Eddie Murphy had done that, he wouldn't have become what he's become.

Which wedding...Pryor's got, like, ten to choose from.
My dad, on the other hand, was a fireman, and he has this great picture of him and Pryor...

Yeah that type of stuff pisses me off as well. But you have to admire him for standing behind what he says. Word on the street is he already ate 9 stupid people and 7 were family (its a fat joke).
