I've been told that it's not a good idea to do an open mic night at a club until you've got an extremely polished routine. Hence, I have avoided the open mics at every improv,the comedy store and the laugh factory (not sure if the icehouse does an open mic).
Hence the question...is sticking to pubs and coffeehouses a good idea until the act is refined. Even more so, are these places "realistic" in terms of gauging laughs and reactions?

if your in a big city... like it sounds you are... i'd avoid a major scene until i knew what i was doing...
if people are laughing it's a good sign no matter where you are...
go watch shows at the regular clubs and see what's working and what's not... compare to what happens at the coffee house.
