ARTICLE ONE:
"Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg is back on TV after wowing network bosses at TBS with a new reality show.
The actress' short-lived Whoopi sitcom was a piece of shit and taken off the air last year, but now the comic is bouncing back with a new show, Sketch Off.
In the program, Goldberg will travel across the nation looking for the best sketch-comedy troupe."

ARTICLE TOO:
"SKETCH OFF (working title) pilot presentation from Whoopi Goldberg’s One Ho Productions
TBS has ordered a pilot presentation for SKETCH OFF (working title), a series that will travel across the United States in search of the best sketch-comedy troupe. It comes from Whoopi Goldberg’s One Ho Productions, with Goldberg, production partner Tom Leonardis (Whoopi) and Sue Fellows (The Chris Rock Show) serving as executive producers and Paul Scheer (Upright Citizens Brigade) serving as co-executive producer."

I'm sure that the winner will truly be the troupe that is the funniest and most innovative, and not just whichever one managed to piss off the fewest network execs. HURRAY FOR THIS SHOW. Hey you know what? HURRAY FOR ALL REALITY TELEVISION!

Plus I'll finally be able to use the phrase: "the Kelly Clarksons of sketch comedy"

I think you guys are being to hard on reality tv! Remember Last Comic Standing? Isn't Dat Phan sooo funny? No, seriously is he funny? I can't tell.
Without reality television we wouldn't have shows like The Office and Arrested Development....
... or... something.
I wrote an essay on this last year, But I've forgotten all my points.

What are you talking about? I've never seen The Office before, but Arrested Development has nothing to do with reality TV. The Mockumentary single camera shooting style has been around for a lot longer than reality TV.

Yes, Arrested Development has got nothing to with reality tv (regardless of the network that it's on), and neither does The Office.

I lied... I haven't the faintest clue what an essay is.

And then all you bitches slam Soma because The Office and Arrested Development aren't reality TV shows.
But Soma never said that TO & AD were themselves reality TV- just that reality TV could be responsible for the reinvention of the sitcom.
Think of it- back when sitcoms ruled the airwaves. Those shows would be vastly different. Both shows automatically get a laugh track- and The Office becomes Friends meets The Drew Carey Show.
Arrested Development probably never makes it on the air- or in the unlikely event that it did- stars Rosanne and Jim Belushi.
Once reality TV hit- the old guard sitcom model failed. Not that The Office or Arrested Development are tearing up the ratings- but I cannot find fault with Soma's hypothesis based on his statement. Why not cut a brother some slack?
Oh- wait. You didn't care what Soma, or Anders, or anybody else said. You just like to dump on people.
I guess abject failure just makes you bitter. Well- have fun in therapy!

We didn't argue that they aren't reality TV shows (that's a given), we both said that neither show has anything to do with reality TV -- which does have a correlation to what Soma said.

I still see neither show as a relative, or even a parody, to reality TV.
And the hand-held camera technique that AD uses has been around since Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), and maybe well before that.

You seem like you've had a lot of pent-up anger directed at these boards, and now you've chosen to let it out in the lamest possible way. Congrats.

My argument is basic- the relationship between reality programming and the reinvention of the sitcom format by shows like Arrested Development and The Office was fostered because cheaper to produce reality programming basically sounded the death knell for the tired traditional sitcom format.
As for your This is Spinal Tap reference- I could not agree more. But can you imagine such a departure from the basic sitcom format pre '98? Network execs forced a laugh track on M*A*S*H*, with the compromise that surgery scenes could be shot au naturel, so to speak.
Am I frustrated with some of the posters around here? Sure, yourself included. Why must a community of over one thousand registered Mr Show and other alternative comedy fans be dominated by a vocal minority who by their own admission, treat people very shabbily? Who knows?
The crankiness quotient is very high. Orange, for elevated- I guess.
It's really a shame.

KGB, thanks for defending me. I was feeling real low. Like go out and buy and then eat a gallon of ice cream low. (The girls know what I'm talking about here.) I had the clippers out to just buzz off all my hair. I was ready to pour my nail polish remover down the drain; chipped toenail polish be damned. And then you turned it all around for me. As my tenth grade -- for my Canadian readers, grade 10 -- Civics teacher used to say all the time, "Not the momma!" Oh, shit, wrong quote. "You've come a long way, Baby."
Now I'm going to have to find the essay.
But KGP has the gist of it. I'm not saying that The Office and Arrested Development are the first of their kind. I'm saying that their popularity and existence is strengthened by the reality television boom.
Blah blah blah.

So Larry David, the co-creator of Seinfeld... didn't have the idea to make Curb until he watched twin-celebrity fear factor?
right.
Reality shows have the highest amount of editing imaginable.... otherwise they'd be fucking boring...which is the opposite idea of a single camera show. Not to say that AD doesn't edit like mad to make a story work, it's just for completely different reasons.
Now I just made all of this up, so if anyone tears it apart don't expect me to defend myself.
Git-r-dun.
Yeah baby!
Oh behave!
