View Full Version : Tina Fey (and her vagina) are killing SNL

I was watching SNL earlier tonight as my weekly act of contrition and I was not only appalled, but intrigued.
They had That 70's Show "star", Topher Grace as a replacement for Jen Garner who is suffering from an act of the virus known as a shitty movie. Topher not surprisingly delivered his lines well and was very funny. This shocked me, something funny on SNL???
I'd heard the elders talk of it, but could it be true? Yes. What does this mean?
TINA FEY AND HER VAGINA HAVE TO DIE
Simple as that. As soon as we get some strong male comedy back in the show, it will be funny again. If you ladies don't like what I have to say, why don't you write and a terrible sketch about it and see if anyone laughs :D.

I don't think so either. Unless they somehow forced Lorne Michaels out and just let him be in charge of everything, in which case he'd probably do it for a year and two, then quit.

I could care less if they beef up on penis, vagina, trannys, etc. Humor is humor and they currently lack it. So however Lorne wants to go about things and beef it up is up to him. Just get rid of Tina or demote her to a simple writer.

I'm going to keep using it until, it gets funny.
Listen the point is, my use of "vagina" in this thread was fairly tounge-in-cheek. Just because she has a vagina doesn't instantly make Tina Fey unfunny, but it doesn't help her either. Bob and David talk about it a lot in the Season 4 commentaries; I was talking to CptPlanet about it last night; a lot of women just aren't funny, they try to hard.
I'm sure you'll use the Brian line of, "most PEOPLE aren't funny" which is true because women occupy quite a majority of people. Listen, the entertainment industry is male driven, I don't know if that is right or not, but given the choice between a hacky male comic and a hacky female comic, I'll take the male.
And, I'm sure that you'll point out that I'm a male and not funny I know that, thank you. But I'm not being paid ridiculous amounts of money to write a sketch show each week like Tina Fey is.

After an argument like that, I must submit the to superiority of women ;).
How is it sexist for me to say that most women aren't funny? Funny is not something that everyone is born or with or can learn. Therefore, it sends to reason that some people may not have it. It just so happens that a lot of women don't have the "funny gene."
So, please, give me 5 comediennes (see I'm not sexist I can use the right term :p) other than Wanda Sykes and Sarah Silverman. You're having a tough time, aren't you?
But, don't take my word, here's an article from a sexist, gender traitor Genevieve Rice:
http://sin.ou.edu/articles/article.php?article_id=1826323398&SIN5=31dd37ff928984c2c1dd83f53eb84b52
Why Women Aren't Funny
It should come as no surprise to my regular readers that my strict regimen of sitting on the couch and staring at the TV includes a large amount of stand-up comedy. Every weekend I look forward to Friday Night Stand-up on Comedy Central (partially because I have no social life because I spend a great deal on digital cable, but that is irrelevant), and my CD player is stocked with the latest comic styling of one of my favorite microphone-huggers. In fact, the only reality show I’ve watched on purpose was NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” And although it was packaged with the gag-worthy obstacles, overly hyped and drawn-out announcements, and annoying gay guy typical of most reality TV shows, the stand-up featured on the show was pretty solid.
So, I got interested, OK, whacked-out obsessed enough about “LCS” to actually head to the show’s message board to find out more information on the show. There, many of the other fans/sad losers had started a thread of their favorite comics of all time. After spending what I consider an embarrassing length of time writing a message for some board most likely comprised of loonies like myself, I finished crafting my top five: George Carlin, Jon Stewart, Dane Cook, Lewis Black, and Wanda Sykes*.
I was just about to post my list when I discovered this message on the thread:
there are almost no female comics listed on this thread. why do you think this is?
Never before had a lower-cased message made with think with such fervor before. Although I did have a woman on my list (the highly respected Ms. Sykes), I was hard-pressed to think of many more that get more than a chuckle out of me. I gave more thought over why women aren’t as funny to me.
I think the main reason is that men seem to be more willing to deliver risky material. Female comediennes tend to stick to certain subjects and rarely cross that shocking line George Carlin hops over with ease. Could you imagine if a woman did “Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV?” I’m sad to report that my gender’s version of the list would include a leaving up the toilet seat joke. Jokes about shopping and clueless men may bring a smirk to my face, but they certainly don’t do the trick that Jon Stewart does making fun of America’s political state. Subtlety is appreciated in some respects, but it won’t it doesn’t make it easier for me to distinguish you from the 30,000 other comediennes complaining about the unpredictable nature of pantyhose.
Also, and I hate to say this, but I’ve seen more women bomb than I have men. There are a lot of female performers that certainly have the energy but not the material. Their sets are pretty much composed of a few whacky movements that scream out, “Look at me, I’m up here, so I must be funny.” It sucks when men do it, but it’s downright embarrassing when one of my own pulls this stuff.
However, I will say that when women do cross the line and surprise me, it is that much more satisfying. I once saw Wanda Sykes live, and I had nothing but respect for her as she skillfully riffed with a drunken bachelorette party. Overall, I wish women would be less restrained than their male counterparts because there’s just no good reason for it.
Nonetheless, my pantyhose has been really acting up today and I really wish my boyfriend would stop leaving the toilet seat up…
Genevieve Rice is a professional writing senior, and she immensely enjoys being a traitor to her gender when given the opportunity. “The Boob Tube” appears biweekly.
Also, the Diceman didn't disappear because he was sexist, he disappeared because his movies sucked and he couldn't come up with new material.

I'm with Tree Beard: Maria Bamford is one of the funniest comics I've seen
One of the reasons Sarah Silverman is so funny is because she *will* make those jokes that most women comics won't make.
I also enjoy Wanda Sykes, Rhetta and Judy Gold.
And as far as women doing political comedy, Lizz Winstead is a political comic. And lest you forget, she's one of the writers of the Daily Show.

Me: I'm editing the [insert newspaper name here] starting this semester
Guy: What the fuck is that?
Me: It's a magazine at my college. Mostly humor.
Guy: You can't do that! You're a woman!
Me: Women can be funny...
Guy :Cheri Oteri
Me: Oh. Fuck.
Women can be funny, but men pull it off more often.
There's this thing where if a woman tries to talk about something like masturbation or whatever and make it funny, they usually forget the funny and go for the "yes I'm a woman and I'm talking about this stuff! Look at me!" And that's stupid.
...Or they turn into an SNL female cast member.

if there were more women comedians as role models for young women you would start to see better quality coming out of the female comedians. But since "the man" only shows shitty female comedians (for the most part...) young girls don't have positive hero-ettes.
It's the same reason why Americans aren't good at hockey. There are very few good american hockey players in the world, so why would a little kid want to grow up and play hockey?
It's also the same reason that no young black kid wants to grow up to be President of the United States. Every black President you've ever had has been such a poor role model.

NEW YORK - Saturday Night Live cast member Tina Fey is set to star in a pilot about a character with whom she has a lot in common.
The pilot, which Fey is making for NBC, will see the comedienne play the head writer of a fictitious comedy show.
Fey made headlines in 1999 when she became the first woman to be named head writer on SNL.
In the yet-to-be-titled pilot, her character will act as a peacemaker between the show-within-a-show's mercurial star and its executive producer.
The pilot will be shot this summer, after the current SNL season ends. It is being produced with the help of Lorne Michaels, Fey's boss on SNL.
A writer with the satirical show since 1997, Fey is credited by many with helping it return to critical – and audience – favour.
In addition to her writing duties, Fey serves as co-host of Weekend Update, the program's regular fake-news segment.
Known for her geek-chic style, she is a favourite of female viewers because she is now a leader in what has traditionally been seen as an all-male preserve.
She has, however, drawn the ire of her male co-stars by saying in interviews that she believes men respond to comedy about "things like sharks and robots and bears."
"I think women – and these are generalizations – are drawn to look inward," she said in one interview.
"We look at tiny character behaviors and specifics, while men are more premise-driven."
The pilot is part of a $4-million U.S. deal that Fey signed in 2003 with NBC.
She also wrote the screenplay for the 2004 motion picture Mean Girls, in which she starred alongside Lindsay Lohan as a high-school teacher.
What a horse's ass.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to watch that new Adam Sandler movie where he plays a shark chased by a robotic Rob Schneider in a bear suit.

Man, I wish Tina would give Bob a few tips. Maybe then he'd actually produce some real comedy, instead of just writing aboutt he same robots and sharks. Hopefully HBO will wise up and let her create Mrs. Show with Tina and her Brilliant Comedy.

Maybe if I gouge myself a giant facial scar with a piece of broken glass and then cover it up with 6.25 kilos of make-up, I too could develop a gender-based grand theory of comedy.

One time my brother and I saw an old repeat of Saturday Night Live in which Tina Fey was grossly overweight. The only way to clearly identify her was through the facial scar. How about that?

Tina Fey is just upset because Anchorman is 1000x better than Mean Girls.

Someone used my article, "Why Women Aren't Funny," in this thread. I don't know whether to be honored or kind of embarrassed (not my best work by a long shot). Anyway, thanks for the exposure.

Haven't seen Anchorman, but Mean Girls was really weak.

That would be me, and it was my pleasure.
Your article was well written and exposed that the "problem" of women in comedy is not something that only men notice.

You really should. Although it is what Ms. Fey would consider a "man's movie."

Jennifer Goodhue (alumni of Second City Toronto) is a woman who makes me laugh.
According to this web site, I am up very late. Or early.
Also, there's something very satisfying about grocery shopping in the middle of the night.

Jennifer Goodhue is powerfully unfunny. Her show, "Comedy Inc." is a colossal piece of shit, and Second City, with the exception of maybe the Chicago stage, has become a sanitized, franchised bastian of mediocrity that churns out safe Wayne Brady humour. Your soul is tainted with suck.

That show IS a colossal piece of shit. Second only to "TruthHorse", which is THE WORST excuse for a sketch comedy show EVER.

If you call your show "Comedy Inc." it pretty much has no choice but to suck.
I hate how sketch groups always come up with the most embarassing names ever. It's like they're worried that people won't realize they're supposed to be funny so they have to put some reference to laughing right in the name. You can tell with 99% accuracy if an improv/sketch group is going to suck because they name themselves shit like "The Goof-a-long Gang" or "Laugh till ya fart!" or some other queer horseshit.

After skimming your post and seeing the mention of horseshit, I became confused and aroused. But upon actually reading the post the second time and discovering you actually said queer horseshit, well that just raised my ire even more so. To show my gratitude, here's a thank you greeting card for both greeting and thanking.
