I haven't seen the movie Magnolia in years, but it just occured to me that Patton Oswalt players a card-dealer in the beginning of the movie. I don't know what made me think of that. It sort of popped into my head. I apologize if this been discussed before.

He claims that P.T. Anderson actually made him hang from that tree for hours while they filmed his character... hanging in the trees.

Just a lil' FYI.

I like the FYI, Jewels. I believe it, even though I know you're usually lying.

Keven Smith makes fun of him as a writer, also... i'll try and post the link later. But he hates Magnolia with a passion, and so do I.

don't wanna write a full review, but all I'll say is that it's one of the top five most embarassing, overrated films I've ever seen (this year's Garden State being the first)... so many brilliant actors given nothing to do but yell and cry and swear - over-the-top scenes everyhwere... The only parts I liked, oddly enough, were the opening scenes with Patton Oswalt. Anderson gave the movie such a great opening then fucks us with the rest of it (And even some of the material in the opening isn't orginal, such as the kid being shot on his way down.)

Oh, there's so much more to say...

by the way, i'm not a fan of Smith's films either... (although Clerks and Amy are pretty decent.)

If you want a much better film watch Robert Altman's Short Cuts, which P.T. Anderson was trying to imitate.

I agree. Magnolia was a real stinker. Good cast, shitty movie.

I never saw Magnolia because it looks like ass, but why the fuck would Kevin Smith think that he gets to make fun of anyone? Did he forget who he is?

Kevin Smith's production offices and comic book store are 5 minutes away from me. Just so you know. Which I'm sure you didn't.

im a big fan of kevin smiths work, and he can make fun of whoever he wants, keep in mind we mock people all the time and none of us have made a movie

Kevin Smith's older stuff is alright, but I don't think he really came into his own until he made Jersey Girl. And by "came into his own" I mean "fucked his relatives."

Did any of you guys hear?

He's making a Clerks 2 called The Passion of the Clerks...

He says it's his funniest script ever but it's so easy to ruin the classic himself if he doesn't do it right.

I'm so iffy about the whole thing.

CptPlanet

it'll suck

Gogo
12-07-2004, 03:03 AM
Yeah, you're probably right. He should just leave it alone.

What's so fucked up is that he said, after the Jay and Silent Bob film, that it was official; that he was ending the whole Askewniverse thing.

And then after Jersey Girl, I guess he thought, "Well that didn't work..."

It's gonna be so hard for him take that back, espcially after doing JG, which had nothing to do with the Askewniverse itself. When you say something like that multiple times and widly release it to the press...it's probably gonna fuck him over.

The Passion of the Clerks will be excellent. I promise. Unfortunately, it will also be good enough to necessitate me going to see the next couple Kevin Smith movies after that, and THOSE are going to suck.

Can someone (seriously) tell me what's so revolutionary and visionary about Kevin Smith? He's made maybe two decent movies, and he's had far more misses than hits. Am I missing some critical contribution he's made to filmmaking or is he really just as overrated as I'm sure he is?

Gogo

It's not his directing that everybody thinks is so great...it's his writing.

His dialouge is, most of time, pretty good and well thought out.
And, in some instances, his stories are really creative, like Dogma. They take unexpected turns that some people can relate to.

I don't think he's revolutionary, per se', but usually his writing is somewhat funny and smart.

BTW, on a side note, Kevin Smith is a huge David Cross fan. I just found these quotes from him on his website:

"[I've]Been listening to a lot of old Gene Loves Jezebel lately. That and David Cross' new cd."

Somebody was asking Kevin who his favorite comedian is besides Carlin, he wrote:

"David Cross. Pick up "Shut Up, You Fucking Baby" and "That's Not Funny" (I think that's what the new one's called). Great stuff."

Another person asked him if he could work with any actor/actress from Alias or Arrested Development who would it be, he put:

I'm a David Cross fan. Also, I've always dug Jason Bateman, too (so glad to see him on a show that's found an audience).

When Kevin got dissed by a DJ, he wrote this:

"During that tour, I was on the radio and tv with plenty of folks who had zero fear to say "I didn't like this movie," or "Man, this is a soft piece of shit." I respect that. But these are the guys that David Cross makes fun of on "Shut Up, You Fucking Baby."

'Hey, funnyman David Cross! You're just in time to help us out with the Friday Morning Fart Song!'

'You're listening to GATOR AND THE LUNATIC!'"

He may not be God at making movies but he, at least, has good taste in comedians!

i think his movies are hit or miss with different people, he has his fans, and we like him alot, and then there are the haters and thats ok

and people inbetween

i dont know where im going with this

but when i saw him live he mentioned the saying he was not gonna do askiewneverse stuff
and he told a story about what scott mosier said when they were thinking about doing it
"well you also said you were going to be an astronaut when you gew up, and nobody holds you to that"

I am not disagreeing with Gogo in particular, I am disagreeing with every human alive that tries to sell Kevin Smith as a good writer. I have yet to meet someone that can convince me that his writing is noteworthy. I have seen all of his movies (except "Jersey Girl", but I doubt that this movie stands out as his writing epic). His writing is no cleverer than, say, that really funny friend you had in college or high school or that uncle everyone has that tells these great stories at Thanksgiving or X-Mas. His writing is average, represents the storytelling ability of about a 10 billion people, and far from great. If he is great, the Cohen Brothers (who I don't nesessarily like) must be mega-geniuses. The people who say he's great think he's great because A) he is speaking their language and B) haven't even come close to experiencing good screenwriting. The average Joe loves watching shit they can relate to. Sure, Shakespeare was writing for the average citizen of his times (the rabble if you will), but Smith ain't no Shakespeare nor is he even a pubic centimeter close to being a modern equivalent. *

Feel free to disagree, but I doubt anyone will change my mind. Even though I probably sound like a prick-wad, I still love you all!

* I bring up Shakespeare only because he was the Kevin Smith of his time (writing for the masses); but by no means is Kevin Smith a modern day Shakespeare. Get it?

Dogma was good. Chasing Amy was good.

He seems like a nice fellow.

But if he never existed my life would not be changed one bit.

He's about as important as Courtney Love.

Sorry.

ok, kevin smith does bits for jay leno. that sucks. he does panasonic commercials or something. that sucks. he is fat. that sucks. he made ben affleck a star, that sucks.

but he also makes films that are more intelligent that the average drivel that spews from studios, while not being completely inaccessible to the "mainstream" audience. rather than completely pandering, he builds a bridge that plebes can cross towards more subversive, quirky, dialogue driven films that were unlikely to be seen otherwise. the fact that he has obtained a modicum of commercial success (and therefore validating said type scripts to be greenlighted by studios) does not automatically render his work meaningless to the hipper-than-thou scene. seen within the greater context of the "indy?" film industry, his success has been a boon for those whose scripts may have been, "clever, but how's it going to make money in iowa?". he showed studios that a somewhat minor filmmaker, accompanied by a devoted yet smaller audience, can make profitable films without the bottom-line risk necessitated by bringing in major stars and hullabaloo production.

that being said, i think clerks 2 is a bad idea. just because "jersey girl" bombed in the midst of the benlo backlash doesn't mean he has to crawl back into the womb.

This could very well be the most boring thread I've ever started to read. I say "started" because it was so boring that I fell asleep in the middle of it. When I woke up my computer was off. And my pants were gone. I don't think they're related.

I like both guys.

I like Chasing Amy and Mallrats.
I like Magnolia and Boogie Nights.

Does that make me a traitor?

I enjoyed Magnolia and enjoyed how they broke down the scenes and how they did that L.A. Story/Grand Canyon theme of stangers crossing paths feel. I think Bob liked the movie too.

I like Chasing Amy cuz I've had plenty of Amy's I chased and I liked Mallrats cuz I get mad at kids riding escelators (spel.)

Bye bye~~
